This year, The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers plans to bring new ideas, events, and leadership talent to Drexel University's forefront. We will, as an organization, strive to leave a positive impression on our members as well as the rest of the Drexel Community. Tonight's meeting will start in conf rm. b (at 6:30pm) and then
move out to the quad, its a meeting about resourcefulness so you
can only imagine what will be going down. also at the end of the
meeting (last like 15 minutes) we're gonna do nominations and
discuss eboard elections so if youre interested please show up.

Fridays and it'd be great if you guys came out and took a peak. Its

College of Engineering is hosting the Greater Philadelphia Sea
Perch Challenge in the DAK this Saturday, May 5th from 9-3pm.

W) Cinco De Mayo - Moi DJing

If you wanna celebrate with the grown folks (21+) and watch the

V) Cinco de Mayo History

Cinco de Mayo is a national holiday in Mexico which is also widely celebrated in the United States. It commemorates the victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin over the French occupational forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. It is not however, the Mexican Independance Day, that's Sept. 16.

So if you're gonna party at least know why you're partying!

Tres: ASME Early Career Forum
"Make the piece of paper you graduate with worth more than it is worth today!" The Philly ECF will help you do exactly that. This event is devoted to professional development and will help you with the transition from college into the work force. Come chat with professionals and other students about their experiences.

Register by April 22, and be entered to win $100 check card.
It's 4/28 from 9am to 7pm in Bossone

The day will consist of a few speakers from various parts of industry and a design competition that will make you think on your feet. You will go from "idea" to "contract presentation" in just a few hours. There will be a limit of 20 teams with 4 members to a team. If nothing else come out for some good food. Breakfast , lunch and dinner will be provided, all for just $10. Bring a friend.

Cinco: Congresso, Exito, Philip Poczik and SHPE

One particular program that they run is called ÉXITO. It is an after-school program that promotes work readiness for students age 14-19. We are partnering with EXITO to host a Networking Suite Simulation for about 35 high school students on Thursday, May 24, 2007 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. We are looking for 10 - 20 leadership-minded Drexel students to serve as the mock company representatives for the simulation. We want to recruit a diverse group of students who will be representative of the multicultural nature of corporate America today—particularly I want them to see Latinos and people who look like them so they know they too can succeed!

Participating means:
Providing an ex. of prof. attire, speech and behavior
Assuming identity of fictional professional
Engaging students in convos based on a prepared outline
Give a short evaluation to the student of how they did
Networking with Congresso and other agencies.

B) Activities Unlimited
Today a bunch of organizations stand around try and get new members, come support SHPE in our endeavor to grow bigger and badder. Gym Noon to 2pm!

C) FISDU Barrio: A Very Brady Barrio. Ever year FISDU puts on a cultural show and SHPE always shows their support, why cause we love 'em as much as they love us! SHPE Notes for Wk of 02.18.07

Pre College Engineering Workshop Volunteers Needed
Biggest baddest minority pre college program on Drexel's campus happens on Sat. Feb. 24, 2007! Since Drexel doesn't have a minority initiative to get more us in college we gotta do it ourselves!

But we need your help!

Volunteers are needed all day (8 am to 4pm) to chaperone students and help with egg drop and toothpick bridge competitions!

HEENAC Scholarship Applications

Earn up to $5,000 to fund your education. All scholarship recipients will receive complimentary registration and hotel accommodations to the HENAAC 2007 Career Conference & Awards Show in San Diego, California (October 11-13, 2007), special recognition in the HENAAC Conference Issue of TECHNiCA magazine, and a letter to his/her Dean, faculty, and MEP Director. * No GB meeting this week, but there is a free event on ancient mayan civilization at the Museum of Archaelogoy and Anthropology from 5 to 6:30p on Wed. Jan. 31. (see post below)

Oddly enough most of the scholarly study of Mayan culture is done by Americans as opposed to the more local researchers of Mexico. Archaeologist Richard Leventhal examines why this is.

SHPE/CDM Scholarship Annoucement: Deadline February 1

Dear Latino Science and Engineering Undergraduate and Graduate Students,

CDM is a global, full-service consulting, engineering, construction, and operations firm helping public and private clients improve the environment and infrastructure through award-winning projects.

CDM and its subsidiaries, CDM Federal Programs Corporation and CDM Constructors Inc in association with the Advancing Hispanic Excellence in Technology, Engineering, Math, and Science AHETEMS have established a scholarship/internship program.

ELIGIBILITY:

SHPE junior, senior or incoming masters student
(NOTE: IF YOU ARE NOT CURRENTLY A SHPE STUDENT, YOU MAY SIGN UP TO BE A SHPE MEMBER AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION AT THE MEMBERSHIP RATE OF $5).
3.0 grade point average or better
Majoring in a engineering, science, or construction discipline, such as environmental, chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical, structural, and geotechnical
Citizenship: US Citizen, legal resident or F1 visa student

Program components include a paid summer internship, mentorship, and scholarship for the ensuing academic year or first-year master's program.

Students will be selected by CDM. The internship will consist of a summer work program, during which the selected students will have the opportunity to work on a number of engineering projects at a CDM office. The key to this concept will be CDM's assignment of a mentor to the student. During the summer, in addition to working closely together, mentors and scholars will spend informal time together participating in recreational and cultural activities to help build the relationship that will endure through the scholars' college career and beyond. After the successful completion of the internship, participants will receive a scholarship to help cover expenses for the next academic year.


STIPEND:
A maximum $2,000 housing and living reimbursement is available.
After the successful completion of the internship, participants will receive a $6,000 scholarship for the next academic year.

SHPE Is MOVING! and other Updates

¡Hola Familia! ¡Feliz Año Nuevo!

I everyone's holiday was good, just a couple of updates for the New Year!

(A) Thanks for the Holiday Gifts!
DU SHPE, LUC and NHBA was able to provide $250.00 worth of gifts for the students at Say Yes to Education and Lighthouse for the holiday. Both organizations extend their warmest thanks and gratitude for the help!

(B) Latino Gala Planning!

(C) Pre College Conference Donations
If you want to donate your time or money to help support the 2nd annual Pre College Engineering Workshop (PCEW) hosted by DU SHPE, Office of Academic Retention and Diversity and SHPE GPC please contact Deb Karhson, whatever you can do (buy prizes, volunteer to lead tours, help set up or break down, generally just be around to be a role model) it would be super appreciated.
